Unihertz, the tech firm that developed the world’s smallest 4G smartphone, the Jelly phone, has designed a new product, dubbed as the Unihertz Atom. The tech firm claims that the Atom phone is the world’s smallest 4G rugged smartphone and the device is targeted towards users who prefer smaller handsets that could complement their active outdoor lifestyle. The Atom phone comes with an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, which means that the device can survive being submerged underwater for a short period of time. In addition, the device maker claims that the Atom phone is shockproof, while the handset’s display is protected against scratches by a sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass.

The Atom phone measures 96 millimeters long, 45 millimeters wide, and 18 millimeters thick, and like the Jelly phone, the handset sports a 2.45-inch display with a resolution of 432 by 240 pixels. However, despite the small size of the smartphone, the device includes features that put it on par with larger handsets. For example, the Atom phone sports a fingerprint scanner located below the display of the device. Moreover, the device also supports the NFC standard, which allows consumers to use the Atom Phone in paying for their purchased items. A programmable button is located at the right side of the device, and it could be assigned to open applications or to trigger in-app actions like snapping photographs. Despite the small size of the Atom phone, the handset can accept two nano SIM cards at the same time, and it can connect to LTE networks running on 22 different bands.

The Atom phone is powered by an octa-core chipset that is clocked at up to 2GHz, and it includes 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The handset’s single rear camera is equipped with a 16-megapixel sensor, while the front-facing selfie camera comes with an 8-megapixel sensor. To keep its lights on, the smartphone contains a 2,000mAh-capacity battery, and it ships with Android 8.1 Oreo installed. Right now, interested consumers may purchase a unit of the Atom phone for $219 on Kickstarter, which is $80 cheaper than the retail value of the device once it starts shipping in October 2018. Moreover, the tech firm is offering a free backpack clip to consumers who also supported the Kickstarter campaign of the Jelly phone last year.
