Is there a way to reset an apparently bricked Atom?

I was using my Atom today and the screen went blank.  I used it, put it on my belt, walked into my office and when I looked at my phone the screen was blank and wouldn't come back on.  The battery was at about 65% before it stopped working.

When I plugged it into the charger the light came on for a few seconds and then shut off.  I've tried holding down the power button, but nothing happens.  When I plugged it into my computer, the computer recognized something was attached for a few seconds and then signaled that it had been disconnected.  It loops through recognizing and then saying nothing is attached every few seconds.

Is there any hope?

I found that once I got my atom into a mode that was probably meant for firmware update, and it would not turn on. I left it for a few hours (actually overnight) then long-pressed on the power button (10-20 seconds?) and it turned on again.
